Upper Endoscopy Procedures in New Hyde Park

If you have heartburn, indigestion, an ulcer, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain or anemia, your doctor may perform upper endoscopy, or esogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). EGD requires using a small, flexible instrument to examine your esophagus, stomach and upper small intestine. You can usually go home within an hour after the procedure. Though the exam is not painful, you may be sedated to prevent gagging.

EGD allows your physician to better diagnose the causes of conditions such as:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • GI bleeding
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Ulcers
  • Weight loss

Upper endoscopy allows your physician to diagnose and manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), screen for Barrett’s esophagus, dilate esophageal strictures and diagnose peptic ulcer disease, celiac disease and GI bleeding.
